Why use Silicone fluid?Unlike ordinary brake fluids Automec silicone fluid actually repels moisture. Ordinary glycol based fluids are ‘hydroscopic’ which means that in time they will absorb moisture from the air and this is what contributes towards a ‘spongy’ feeling brake pedal. This is not good for performance vehicles. Moisture in the brake fluid also contributes to rust/corrosion of brake pipes. Silicone is cheaper? Most manufacturers recommend that the brake fluid in cars is changed every 2 years. This is because ordinary brake fluid deteriorates over time. Automec Silicone fluid will never deteriorate, it will never absorb moisture (in fact it will repel moisture) and therefore will never need replacing – unless of course it becomes contaminated. Silicone fluid is more expensive to initially buy; but since it will never need replacing it does work out cheaper in the long run. Add to this the benefit of a firmer pedal feel that never becomes ‘spongy’ and it is clear to see why motorsport teams, and super-car manufacturers always use silicone fluid. Switching to silicone The brake system should be completely drained of the old glycol based fluid before filling with silicone. Silicone fluid can be mixed with glycol, but this will reduce its performance. How much fluid is required? To completely replace the fluid in most cars you will need to order 1 litre (sometimes on small cars 500ml will suffice). Order the 250ml or 500ml bottles for topping up.
